The Poinsettia and Christmas
The Poinsettia is named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, who brought the plant from Mexico to the United States in 1828. The plant first became associated with Christmas in 16th century Mexico. A Christmas legend tells of a girl too poor to offer a Christmas gift to Jesus. Inspired by an angel, she gathered random weeds and planted them by the altar. In the morning, the weeds has transformed into the brilliant red flower. The Poinsettia became a Christmas staple in America through the efforts of Paul Ecke, Jr. Ecke’s family had dominated Poinsettia production in the States for three generations, but Paul popularized the Poinsettia by sending free plants to television stations from November to Christmas. For decades, the Eckes also possessed a proprietary process that allowed their Poinsettias to bloom in a fuller and more colorful manner.
